Wieluń carries a heavy historical weight as the city where World War II began. On September 1, 1939, even before the shelling of Westerplatte, the sleeping, defenseless city was bombed by the Luftwaffe. Over 70% of the city center, including a hospital, was destroyed, and hundreds of civilians were killed. Today, Wieluń is an important place of remembrance. Numerous memorials and the Museum of the Wieluń Land document the tragedy and honor the victims. A visit to the ruins of the All Saints' Collegiate Church is a moving experience. Despite its tragic past, Wieluń was rebuilt and preserves elements of its earlier history. The city has a medieval street layout, remnants of the 14th-century Gothic defensive walls, and the Kraków Gate. The classicist town hall in the market square is a testament to later prominence. The city is located in the Łódź Voivodeship and is best reached by car. A visit to Wieluń is a lesson in history and a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
