St. James' Cathedral in Szczecin (Bazylika archikatedralna św. Jakuba) stands as an outstanding monument of Brick Gothic architecture and is the largest religious building in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Founded at the end of the 12th century, the structure was continuously expanded over the centuries, resulting in a massive and imposing edifice that unmistakably dominates the skyline of the port city. The cathedral is distinguished by its extraordinary interior volume, making it the second-largest church in Poland. During devastating Allied bombing raids in 1944, the cathedral was heavily destroyed, including the dramatic collapse of its vaults and walls. The complex reconstruction effort dragged on until the 1970s. In 2008, a spectacular new copper-clad spire was added to the church, elevating the cathedral to a total height of 110 meters. The soaring tower houses an observation deck near the top, offering visitors panoramic panoramic views over Szczecin and the Oder River.
