Polesie National Park (Poland)

Weather…

The Polesie National Park, situated in the flat plains of the Lublin region in eastern Poland, preserves an ecosystem that is exceptional for Central Europe, strongly resembling the Siberian tundra and forest-tundra. This remote park is a vast, flat waterscape defined by a complex network of karst lakes, expansive nutrient-poor raised bogs, impenetrable swamp forests, and vast expanses of peatlands. This unique hydrology fosters a relict flora from the Ice Age, including several species of rare carnivorous plants like sundews, alongside boreal willow species. The wetlands are of critical importance to wildlife, particularly serving as one of the most vital and intact habitats for the highly endangered European pond turtle, whose conservation is of the utmost priority. Ornithologically, the area is also a hotspot, hosting breeding grounds for the elusive Eurasian curlew and the common crane, making the park a true paradise for nature observers.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
May and June are good for the breeding season of many waterbirds, including rare species like the black tern. September is excellent for crane gatherings.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is the best time to hear bird song over the lakes. At dusk, cranes gather at their roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Making fires is strictly forbidden in the park, especially in the dry peat bogs. Stay on the boardwalks to avoid damaging the sensitive moorland.
🎒
What to bring
A binocular with good magnification helps identify bird species on the lakes. Mosquito repellent is essential in summer due to abundant insects.
🧭
Getting there
The park lies near Lublin and is best reached by car. Signposted roads from the town of Włodawa lead to the visitor centre.
🦌
What to expect
Birdlife is rich, but animals are often distant - bring time and quiet. The mosquito infestation can be very intense in summer, so patience and appropriate clothing are needed.
