Lublin Upland (Poland)

Weather…

The Lublin Upland is a gently undulating, expansive plain in eastern Poland that stands out due to its exceptional geological composition. Its foundation consists of a thick layer of Cretaceous rock, but the relief is defined by the overlying mantle of loess, which is often several meters thick. This fine dust, deposited by wind during the Ice Ages, has developed into extremely fertile chernozem soils, leading to the region often being dubbed the breadbasket of Poland. However, the soft consistency of the loess makes the land highly susceptible to water erosion; over the centuries, this has carved dense networks of deep, steep-walled gullies and sunken lanes (wąwozy) into the landscape. These dense gullies, often overgrown with trees and shrubs, stand in stark scenic contrast to the flat, intensively farmed plateaus above and provide valuable ecological niches.
