Lublin Castle (Poland)

Weather…

Lublin Castle (Zamek Lubelski), perched commandingly on a hill overlooking the Old Town, is one of the oldest and most historically significant structures in eastern Poland. Originally founded in the 12th century, the fortress was massively expanded under King Casimir the Great in the 14th century, a period from which the massive, surviving Romanesque round keep (donjon) dates. However, the undisputed jewel of the complex is the Holy Trinity Chapel. Commissioned by King Władysław II Jagiełło, its Gothic interior was completely covered in 1418 with unique Russian-Byzantine frescoes, representing a fascinating and rare synthesis of Western and Eastern Christian art. The castle's history also harbors very dark chapters: during the 19th and 20th centuries, it served for over 120 years as a notorious prison, first under the Russian tsars, later as a Gestapo prison during the German occupation, and finally under the Soviet NKVD.
