Krzemionki Opatowskie is a complex of prehistoric flint mines from the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, operating between 3900 and 1600 BC. Located near Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, it is one of the best-preserved monuments of prehistoric mining technology in the world. The site was dedicated to the extraction of striped flint, a rare material used for producing prestigious axes and tools found across Central Europe. The mining area covers approximately 78.5 hectares and contains over 4,000 shafts, some reaching depths of nine meters, interconnected by a network of underground tunnels. Prehistoric miners utilized tools made from deer antlers and stone to excavate the flint. In 2019, Krzemionki was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its exceptional archaeological significance. A dedicated museum features an underground tourist route where visitors can observe the ancient mining techniques and geological structures.
