Holy Cross Ridge (Poland)

Weather…

The Holy Cross Ridge, known as Łysogóry, is the central and highest range of the Holy Cross Mountains in central Poland. It is one of the oldest geological structures in Europe, primarily composed of Cambrian quartzites dating back over 500 million years. The most characteristic relief feature is the blockfields, locally called 'gołoborza', which are vast slopes of weathered stone fragments located near the summits. The highest peak is Łysica at 614 meters, closely followed by Łysa Góra, which hosts an 11th-century Benedictine abbey from which the mountains derive their name. The ridge is heavily forested, featuring ancient fir and beech stands protected within the Holy Cross National Park. Historically, the area was a significant center for ancient iron smelting and has long been a site of both pagan cults and Christian pilgrimages, embedding it deeply in Polish folklore and history.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The central ridge is conveniently approached from the city of Kielce, offering great bus connections. Popular trailheads are located in Święta Katarzyna and Nowa Słupia villages.
📅
Best season
The area is exceptionally beautiful in October when ancient fir and beech forests display lively colors. Spring is also a wonderful time for hiking with pleasant temperatures.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Trails mostly traverse deeply shaded forests with relatively mild inclines, perfectly suited for less experienced hikers. Certain sections require crossing iconic boulder fields.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip are entirely sufficient for the paths winding through the forest. Packing a light rain jacket is smart due to the damp microclimate.
🅿️
Parking
Designated paid tourist parking lots are readily available at the primary park entrances. These zones rarely reach full capacity outside of major national holiday weekends.
⚠️
Safety
The famous boulder fields become notoriously slippery during rain, so visitors must stick to the wooden walkways. Ticks are highly prevalent, making strong repellents essential.
⏱️
Time needed
A straightforward hike up to the Łysa Góra summit and the historic monastery typically takes two to three hours. Traversing the entire main ridge requires a full, engaging day.
