Kampinos Forest (Poland)

Weather…

The Kampinos Forest is a world-class ecological phenomenon, existing as an immense, deeply wild forest area bordering directly onto the city limits of the bustling metropolis of Warsaw. The striking landscape of this UNESCO-protected Biosphere Reserve was heavily shaped during the last Ice Age by powerful glacial meltwaters, and is currently characterized by an incredibly unique interplay of dry, pine-covered inland sand dunes and wet, highly inaccessible alder swamps. This highly distinctive relief tightly provides diverse habitats for a rich, often strongly contrasting flora and fauna within a remarkably compact area. The region proudly records massive successes in wildlife conservation, most notably regarding the highly successful reintroduction of moose, lynxes, and beavers, which had all been nearly completely exterminated here in the past. Hundreds of kilometers of perfectly marked hiking and cycling trails weave continuously through the sandy hills and boggy hollows, making Kampinos an absolutely indispensable recreational haven.
