Modlin Fortress (Poland)

Weather…

The Modlin Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved 19th-century defensive complexes in Europe. Located at the strategic confluence of the Vistula and Narew rivers, its construction began in 1806 under the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. Following the Napoleonic era, the fortress was significantly expanded by the Russian Empire, becoming a massive multi-ringed fortification. It is home to Europe's longest building, a barracks measuring over 2,250 meters in length. Modlin played a crucial role in several major conflicts, most notably during the Polish-Soviet War of 1920 and the defense of Poland in September 1939, where it held out against German forces until the capital's surrender. The site is an exceptional example of military engineering, featuring a mix of brick and reinforced concrete structures. Today, the fortress serves as a popular tourist attraction, with several museums and viewing towers providing insight into its long military history.
