Tirad Pass in Ilocos Sur is the site of a legendary and heroic battle during the Philippine-American War, often called the 'Philippine Thermopylae.' On December 2, 1899, the young General Gregorio del Pilar, only 24 years old, and his 60 soldiers fought to the death to halt the advance of American troops and ensure President Emilio Aguinaldo's retreat into the mountains. Today, Tirad Pass is a national shrine set in a spectacular mountain landscape, offering hikers a panoramic view of the West Philippine Sea.
