Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag (Philippines)

Weather…

The Sinking Bell Tower of Laoag City is one of the most enigmatic landmarks in Ilocos Norte province. Built by Augustinian missionaries after a devastating 1707 earthquake, the tower earns its name from the fact that it sinks a little deeper into the sandy ground each year. It is said that in the past, a person on horseback could comfortably ride through its main archway; today, a person of average height has to stoop to enter. Despite its slow descent, the massive structure of brick and coral stone has stood firm for over 300 years. It is situated about 85 meters away from the Saint William's Cathedral, a placement atypical of Spanish urban planning, which was likely intended to protect the main church body if the tower collapsed.
