Siula Grande (Peru)

Weather…

Siula Grande is an imposing mountain in the Cordillera Huayhuash range of the Peruvian Andes, reaching an elevation of 6,344 meters. It gained worldwide fame following the dramatic survival story of mountaineers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates in 1985, documented in the book and film 'Touching the Void'. The mountain is regarded as one of the most technically challenging and dangerous peaks in the region, primarily due to its extremely steep ice faces and unpredictable weather conditions. The West Face, where the famous accident occurred, is nearly vertical and demands the highest level of technical climbing skill. Geologically, the massif is part of the young fold mountains of the Andes, composed mainly of limestone and sedimentary rock covered by glacial ice. Despite its fame, Siula Grande remains a rarely climbed peak because the approach is long and objective hazards like avalanches and serac falls are high. The mountain's surroundings are characterized by turquoise glacial lakes, such as Lake Sarapo, which provide a sharp contrast to the white ice of the summit.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the base of this remote mountain typically requires a challenging multi-day trek starting from distant Andean villages like Chiquián or Llamac, utilizing local guides for the long approach.
📅
Best season
The generally recognized trekking and climbing season falls during the Andean dry period from May to September, offering the most stable weather conditions and significantly reduced avalanche risks.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The surrounding landscape is characterized by extreme high-altitude alpine terrain, featuring incredibly steep rock faces, deeply crevassed glaciers, and demanding moraine paths suited for mountaineers.
🎒
What to bring
Any approach requires comprehensive expedition-level mountaineering equipment, including four-season tents, sub-zero sleeping bags, climbing ropes, crampons, ice axes, and extensive high-energy provisions.
🅿️
Parking
There is absolutely no vehicle access near the mountain itself; vehicles are typically left in secure lots at the trek starting points in regional hub towns like Huaraz before beginning the long walk.
⚠️
Safety
This is an incredibly hostile environment where severe altitude sickness, rapidly changing weather systems, hidden glacial crevasses, and frequent ice falls pose very real and continuous safety threats.
⏱️
Time needed
Expeditions targeting this area typically require several continuous weeks to safely accommodate the necessary long approach, essential altitude acclimatization days, and the actual climbing attempts.
