Best season
The prime observation period is the Peruvian winter from June to October, when fog turns the Lomas de Lachay into a green oasis. During these months, migratory birds, Andean flamingos and the elusive Andean fox are most active and easiest to spot.
Best time of day
Early morning hours offer the best chance to spot animals in the cool misty landscape. The evening twilight is also rewarding as foxes and birds emerge to forage.
Etiquette
Stay strictly on marked trails to protect the sensitive fog-dependent vegetation. Do not feed any wildlife and maintain a respectful distance of at least 20 meters.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars is essential for spotting birds and foxes in the open landscape. Sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof jacket are strongly recommended due to fog and moisture.
Getting there
The reserve is located about 100 km north of Lima and reachable by car via the Panamerican Highway. The final kilometres are on an unpaved road passable with normal vehicles.
What to expect
Wildlife watching here requires patience as animals are shy and fog can severely limit visibility. Allow at least two to three hours for a relaxed walk.
