Huanchaco is one of Peru's most appealing coastal towns and a living monument to pre-Columbian seafaring traditions. The 'Caballitos de Totora', small boats made of woven reed, are still used by fishermen today, just as they were thousands of years ago. The town was declared a World Surfing Reserve, attracting wave riders from around the globe. The beachfront promenade is lined with restaurants serving what is arguably the best ceviche in the country. Its location is well-suited for exploring the nearby adobe city of Chan Chan, the former capital of the Chimú Empire. Huanchaco gives a relaxed atmosphere with sunsets that bathe the Pacific in magical light. Arrival is typically through Trujillo, which is only 15 minutes away. While the climate is dry and mild, the months from December to March are the sunniest and best for a beach holiday.
