Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna (Peru)

Weather…

The Huacas of Moche, located just south of Trujillo, were the religious and political center of the powerful Moche culture between 100 and 700 AD. The complex is dominated by two colossal adobe structures: the Huaca del Sol, which was the largest administrative building in the pre-Columbian Americas, and the Huaca de la Luna, a beautifully preserved ceremonial temple. While much of the Huaca del Sol was destroyed by colonial treasure hunters, the Huaca de la Luna remains a wonder of ancient art, featuring animated mud-relief murals of the 'Aia Paec' or Decapitator god, warriors, and spiders. These murals, still glowing with their original red, yellow, and blue pigments, offer a vivid and sometimes chilling window into the rituals and beliefs of this sophisticated coastal civilization.
