Huaca de la Luna (Peru)

Weather…

The Huaca de la Luna (Pyramid of the Moon) was the principal religious center of the Moche culture, situated at the base of Cerro Blanco in northern Peru. Unlike the nearby Huaca del Sol, this pyramid was used primarily for ritual purposes, including large-scale human sacrifices. The complex consists of several superimposed platforms built over a period of 600 years (100-700 AD), with each new stage entombing the previous one. It is world-renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved polychrome wall friezes and murals. These artworks depict mythological figures like the god Ai Apaec (the "Decapitator"), as well as processions of warriors and bound prisoners. The lively colors, red, yellow, black, and white, were created using mineral pigments and remained vivid due to centuries of protection by accumulating sand. Archaeological research has revealed numerous elite burials and sacrificial pits, providing profound insights into Moche social hierarchy and belief systems.
