Hernandarias, a city in the Alto Paraná Department in the far east of Paraguay, lies about 15 kilometres north of Ciudad del Este on the right bank of the Paraná River and is known as the Latin American Capital of Energy because the larger share of the binational Itaipú hydroelectric dam lies within its limits. The town was founded in 1898 and named after the conquistador Hernando Arias de Saavedra, one of the first Paraguay-born colonial governors of the Río de la Plata. With around 80 000 inhabitants the city lives mainly from the energy industry, from tourism around the Itaipú reservoir and from soybean farming. The reservoir, covering 1 350 square kilometres, is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world and also serves as a recreation area with marinas, beaches and ecological reserves. Highlights include the Itaipú visitor centre, the Tatí Yupí biological refuge and the modern parish church. The economy benefits from well-paid jobs in the energy sector, which considerably raises local living standards.
