Monday Falls (Paraguay)

Weather…

The Monday Falls are located in the Presidente Franco district, just a few kilometers from Ciudad del Este in eastern Paraguay. These falls consist of three main drops with an impressive height of approximately 40 meters, fed by the Monday River shortly before it joins the Paraná River. The surrounding protected area covers about 9 hectares of forest, representing one of the last remnants of the Atlantic Forest in this specific region. Unlike the nearby Iguazu Falls, Monday Falls offer a more tranquil and pristine experience, embedded in dense subtropical vegetation. Historically, the site served as an important landmark for the indigenous Guaraní people, who utilized the river for navigation and trade. Today, the Saltos del Monday Municipal Park is a key destination for ecotourism, featuring observation decks and adventure sports facilities. The falls are not only a natural wonder but also a critical resource for local biodiversity and conservation efforts within Paraguay.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Located remarkably close to the bustling urban center of Ciudad del Este, the dedicated municipal park completely surrounding the waterfalls is easily and quickly accessible by private car or local taxi via clearly marked, fully paved access roads.
📅
Best season
The majestic falls are spectacularly beautiful absolutely year-round, but visiting shortly after heavy regional rainfall dramatically and impressively increases both the sheer water volume and the resulting immense cooling mist.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The well-established natural park perfectly features meticulously maintained walking trails, highly secure elevated viewing platforms, and sturdy wooden walkways that gracefully traverse the surrounding lush subtropical forest.
🎒
What to bring
A reliable waterproof jacket or a simple plastic poncho is highly recommended to properly protect against the pervasive, inescapable spray emanating from the falls, along with sensible walking shoes that feature a surprisingly good grip on wet surfaces.
🅿️
Parking
The municipal park thoughtfully provides a specifically designated, reassuringly secure parking lot located comfortably near the main entrance gates, usually capable of seamlessly accommodating both smaller private vehicles and large tourist buses.
⚠️
Safety
Excited visitors must always remain strictly on the officially marked trails and securely behind the metal safety railings, as the moss-covered rocks positioned near the extreme edge of the plunging gorge are extremely slippery and potentially deadly.
⏱️
Time needed
Casually exploring the extensive walkways, patiently taking impressive photographs, and fully enjoying the various dramatic panoramic viewpoints generally takes about one to two fulfilling hours for the absolute majority of international travelers.
