Sanur Citadel (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

The Sanur Citadel is a formidable landmark of Ottoman military architecture located in the northern West Bank. Constructed in the 18th century by the powerful Jarrar clan, the fortress served as a defiant regional power center that frequently challenged central Ottoman authority. Its defensive capabilities were legendary; in 1799, even the notorious Ahmed Pasha al-Jazzar failed to breach its walls during a major siege. The citadel was eventually partially destroyed in the mid-19th century following successive military campaigns. Perched atop a prominent hill, the fortress overlooks the expansive and fertile Merj Sanur plain, which uniquely transforms into a shallow lake during heavy winter rains. Today, visitors can explore the surviving stone walls, arched gateways, and lookout towers that offer a window into the feudal history of Palestine. The site remains a symbol of local independence and provides one of the most striking panoramic views in the Jenin district.
