Mount Ebal Nature Area (Palestinian Territories)

Weather…

Mount Ebal is the highest summit in the northern West Bank, rising to an elevation of approximately 940 meters. Situated north of the city of Nablus, it stands directly opposite Mount Gerizim, and together they frame the historic valley of Shechem. In biblical tradition, Ebal is recognized as the 'mount of cursing,' contrasting with Gerizim, the mount of blessing. The mountain's slopes are home to significant archaeological sites, including a structure identified by some as Joshua’s Altar. Ecologically, the rugged terrain provides a vital sanctuary for various birds of prey and partridges. From the peak, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views that stretch across the region, from the Galilee mountains in the north to the coastal plains in the west. It remains a key location for those interested in biblical history and Mediterranean mountain landscapes.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The mountain's vast natural areas can generally be reached from the outskirts of Nablus via rather steep, unpaved tracks. A highly suitable off-road vehicle or utilizing local taxis to the higher foothills is extremely helpful to start.
📅
Best season
Spring is an absolutely excellent time for nature observation, as the steep slopes appear particularly lush, green, and lively. During the summer months, the intense, unrelenting sunlight can make the entirely unshaded ascent considerably more difficult.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The rugged terrain is characterized by very steep, rocky slopes that require absolute surefootedness and excellent balance. The paths are often highly irregular, partially covered with loose scree, and demand a great deal of stamina from the hiker.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with thick, deeply treaded soles is completely indispensable to safely avoid dangerous slips on the loose stones. A good pair of binoculars for bird watching and plenty of drinking water must strictly be part of your basic equipment.
🅿️
Parking
The best and safest parking spots are usually found in the lower, more populated outskirts of the adjacent urban neighborhoods. Never leave your vehicles unattended on isolated dirt tracks to successfully prevent any risk of theft or material damage.
⚠️
Safety
Due to the close proximity to security-sensitive areas around Nablus, prior inquiry about the current daily situation is mandatory. Always stay on known paths and, whenever possible, undertake your explorations accompanied by a trusted local guide.
⏱️
Time needed
An extensive tour dedicated to bird watching and fully enjoying the expansive views can easily take anywhere from three to five hours. The steep ascent naturally requires a slow, steady pace and plenty of well-planned rest breaks along the way.
