Paektu Mountain (North Korea)

Weather…

Mount Paektu, also known as Baekdu-san, is an active stratovolcano located on the border between North Korea and China, standing as the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula at 2,744 meters. It is revered as the most sacred mountain in Korea, deeply embedded in the national identity and mythology of both Korean states. At the center of the summit lies Heaven Lake (Chonji), a massive crater lake contained within a caldera formed by a cataclysmic eruption around 946 AD. This event, known as the 'Millennium Eruption,' was one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in recorded history. For North Korea, the mountain holds immense political significance as the official birthplace of Kim Jong-il and the source of the 'Paektu bloodline,' which underpins the legitimacy of the nation's leadership. The surrounding area is an ecological treasure, providing a habitat for rare species such as the Siberian tiger and black bear, alongside unique alpine flora. Due to extreme weather conditions, the summit is frequently shrouded in clouds, and the lake remains frozen for much of the year.
