Heaven Lake, known as Chonji in Korean, is a panoramic volcanic crater lake situated atop Mount Paektu on the border between North Korea and China. Formed by a massive eruption around 946 AD, the lake sits at an elevation of approximately 2,189 meters, making it one of the highest alpine lakes in the world. It covers an area of roughly 9.8 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 384 meters, containing nearly two billion tons of water. The lake is typically frozen from October to mid-June, with ice thickness reaching up to one meter during the peak of winter. In Korean culture, Mount Paektu and Heaven Lake are considered sacred, often cited as the spiritual birthplace of the Korean people. The surrounding caldera is characterized by sharp basalt cliffs and sparse vegetation adapted to the harsh high-altitude climate. While scientific studies focus on its volcanic activity and unique limnology, local legends often speak of mysterious creatures inhabiting its deep waters. Access to the lake is highly restricted and serves as a major destination for state-sponsored pilgrimages and scientific expeditions.

Reaching this border crater lake usually requires joining organized state tours that handle all complicated logistics and transportation. Access is most commonly achieved via funicular railways or specifically approved, well-developed mountain roads.

Summer is inherently the only practical time for a visit, as it reliably provides clear visibility and passable routes to the crater summit. For most of the year, the lake is frozen solid and exposed to extremely harsh, bitterly cold winter conditions.

The deep blue lake rests deeply within a volcanic caldera impressively surrounded by jagged, barren peaks and steep crater walls. Visitor movement is strictly confined to paved observation platforms and rigorously designated walking pathways.
