💡 Tips
- Located deep in the mountains, Kanggye is rarely open to Western tourists; if permitted, expect a highly structured itinerary.
- The climate is significantly colder here than in Pyongyang; pack very warm clothing if visiting outside of summer.
- As a strategic and logistical hub, photography rules here are extremely strict. Keep your camera away unless explicitly told otherwise.
- The journey through the mountainous terrain is incredibly scenic, but roads can be rough.
- You will likely be accommodated in a state guesthouse; bring all necessary personal items, as local shops are off-limits.
🍽 Food
Meals often feature foraged mountain vegetables and wild mushrooms from the surrounding Chagang province.
Due to the harsh climate, potatoes are a staple food here, often served as noodles or pancakes at the guesthouse.
You might have the chance to try locally distilled liquors made from mountain berries or ginseng.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The heavily forested region produces wooden handicrafts, sometimes available at the guesthouse shop.
Packaged local teas or dried herbs may be sold at designated tourist points.
If your hotel or guesthouse is near the river, the views of the surrounding mountains are spectacular and peaceful.
Your only permitted area for an unaccompanied walk will be the immediate, enclosed grounds of your accommodation.

Kanggye is the strategically located capital of Chagang province, a mountainous and sparsely populated region in northern North Korea on the border with China. The city only became a provincial capital in 1949 when Chagang was separated from North Pyongan to move the country's defense industry into the rugged terrain. Kanggye is therefore an important center of the North Korean arms industry, with many factories hidden in underground facilities. The city also serves as an administrative and logistical center for the surrounding mountainous region. Due to its military importance, Kanggye was long inaccessible to foreigners, and access is still heavily restricted today. The economy is dominated by armaments production, as well as forestry and timber industries.
