Anguk Temple (North Korea)

Weather…

Anguk Temple in Pyongsong is a Buddhist temple originally founded in the 6th century during the Goguryeo Kingdom. Its name means 'Temple of the Peaceful Country'. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its long history, most recently in the 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty. The complex is located on a mountainside and includes several buildings, among them a main prayer hall and a pavilion. Particularly noteworthy is the Taeungsong Hall, a 1785 reconstruction known for its wood carvings and architectural details. The temple is a fine example of late Joseon-period temple architecture and an important cultural heritage in the Pyongsong region. Though less famous than the temples in Pyongyang or the Kumgang Mountains, it attests to the deep roots of Buddhism in Korean history.
