Dallol Fogha is a fossil river plain located in southwestern Niger, extending south of the town of Birni N'Gaouré. Geologically, it is part of the Continental Terminal formations that create broad depressions within the Niger basin. A defining characteristic of Dallol Fogha is its saline soil and the presence of brine springs, which support traditional salt extraction. This economic activity has been an integral part of local culture and regional trade for centuries. The valley floor is flat and subject to partial flooding during the rainy season, which encourages the development of seasonal grazing lands. The vegetation is specialized, consisting of salt-tolerant plants and scattered acacia trees. Historically, Dallol Fogha acted as a corridor between the commercial centers on the Niger River and the Hausa states to the east. Today, the region is primarily recognized for its ecological importance as part of the Ramsar international wetland system, providing essential habitat for numerous migratory bird species.
