Waddinxveen is a municipality in the province of South Holland, situated along the river Gouwe. The town's history is deeply connected to peat extraction and land reclamation, which began in the 13th century and significantly altered the local landscape. As a result of intensive peat cutting, the land level dropped over centuries, creating deep-lying polders; today, parts of Waddinxveen are more than six meters below sea level. A prominent landmark and industrial monument is the 'Hefbrug,' a vertical-lift bridge over the Gouwe built in 1936, which serves as the town's symbol. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Waddinxveen evolved into a center for the paper and furniture industries, facilitated by its strategic waterway connections. Currently, the municipality benefits from its central location within the 'Green Heart' (Groene Hart) of the Netherlands, close to Gouda and Rotterdam. Beyond its industrial roots, the 'Het Weegje' nature area provides residents and visitors with essential recreational space in a classic Dutch polder setting.
