Voorburg is a town in the province of South Holland, practically merged with The Hague. Despite its proximity to the bustling city, Voorburg has retained its own quiet and historic character. Its most notable feature is its Roman past; it was once the site of Forum Hadriani, the northernmost Roman city on the European mainland. The remains can be visited at an open-air museum. The old center of Voorburg is beautiful, with the Herenstraat as its main artery, lined with boutiques, specialty shops, and cozy restaurants. The area is also known for its 'hofjes' (almshouse courtyards) and splendid estates like Hofwijck, once owned by the poet Constantijn Huygens. Getting there is easy as it is well-connected to The Hague and other cities by trains and trams. A visit in late spring or summer is convenient to see the parks and gardens in full bloom.
