St. Laurence Church Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Great or St. Lawrence Church (Sint-Laurenskerk) is the sole surviving medieval building in the city center of Rotterdam. Constructed between 1449 and 1525 in the Brabantine Gothic style, it was originally a Roman Catholic church before transitioning to Protestantism during the Reformation. During the German bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940, the church was severely damaged, leaving only the walls and the tower standing amidst the devastation. Despite initial plans to demolish the ruins, the people of Rotterdam decided to restore the building, a process that lasted from 1522 to 1968 and became a symbol of the city's resilience and rebirth. Today, the church houses the largest mechanical pipe organ in Europe and serves as both a place of worship and a cultural venue. Its 64-meter-high tower is open to visitors, providing a unique vantage point to view the modern skyline of the reconstructed city.
