Amsterdam Centraal Station (Netherlands)

Weather…

Amsterdam Centraal Station is the primary transport hub of the Dutch capital and a magnificent example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. Built between 1881 and 1889 based on the designs of Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum, the station’s opening signaled the start of Amsterdam's modern era of expansion. Due to the marshy nature of the IJ riverfront, the station was constructed on three artificial islands supported by a foundation of more than 9,000 wooden piles. Its richly decorated facade, featuring grand towers, intricate reliefs, and a majestic main entrance, reflects the wealth and technical optimism of the late 19th century. The station effectively separates the historic city center from the IJ waterfront and serves over 250,000 passengers daily. Beyond its rail functions, the building now houses diverse shops and restaurants and acts as the starting point for major international rail lines, including Thalys and Eurostar.
