Waalwijk is a historic city in the province of North Brabant, tucked away in the heart of the Langstraat region. The city is nationally renowned as the center of the Dutch leather and shoe industry, a tradition that began in the 18th century and deeply influenced the area's architecture and economy. Waalwijk was granted city rights in 1303 and thrived as a commercial hub due to its location near the Bergsche Maas river. An architectural standout is the Church of St. John the Baptist, a striking neo-Byzantine structure featuring numerous copper-clad domes that dominate the skyline. In recent decades, Waalwijk has transitioned from an industrial base into a modern logistics and services hub, while continuing to celebrate its heritage at the Leather and Shoe Museum. Its proximity to the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park also makes it a popular starting point for nature enthusiasts. Waalwijk retains its distinct Brabantian character and serves as an important regional hub.
