Oosterhout is a characterful city in the province of North Brabant, renowned for its rich religious history and photogenic country estates. A unique feature of the city is the 'Slotjes', a group of seven small castles and monumental manor houses, five of which have been preserved to this day. The city features a long monastic tradition that remains active in the 'Holy Triangle' (Heilige Driehoek), an area containing three monasteries that are still inhabited and surrounded by gardens and farmlands. During the 19th century, Oosterhout developed into an industrial hub, particularly for sugar refining and pottery production, aided by its location on the Wilhelmina Canal. The St. John's Basilica, a monumental structure in the Brabantine Gothic style, dominates the town center and reflects the region's Catholic heritage. Today, Oosterhout is a spirited municipality with a strong retail presence and a favorable location near the De Biesbosch National Park. The city is also famous across the country for its traditional confectionery, such as the Oosterhout cinnamon sticks.
