Kwando River (Namibia)

Weather…

The Kwando River is a major hydrological system in southwestern Africa, originating in the central highlands of Angola. It flows in a southeasterly direction, forming the border between Angola and Zambia for a long stretch before entering Namibia's narrow Zambezi Region. The river is renowned for its highly meandering course and its extensive reed and papyrus swamps, which provide sanctuary for numerous rare species such as the sitatunga and red lechwe. Due to the very low gradient, the flow velocity slows down significantly in Namibia, leading to the formation of the Linyanti swamp system. The Kwando is ecologically invaluable, serving as a green artery in an otherwise arid region and acting as a vital migration corridor for elephants between Namibia, Botswana, and Angola. Human settlements along the river are limited due to seasonal flooding and protected national parks like Bwabwata and Mudumu. Geologically, the Kwando is a remnant of a much larger prehistoric drainage system.
