Quelimane Old Cathedral (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Old Cathedral of Quelimane, also known as Catedral Velha de Quelimane, is a striking example of colonial architecture standing on the banks of the Bons Sinais River. Built in the 1770s (c. 1776) by the Portuguese, it served as the primary religious center for the Zambezia region for centuries. The building is characterized by its massive stone walls and a distinctive twin-tower facade, following the classical Portuguese Baroque style typical of overseas religious structures. During the colonial era, Quelimane was a major port for the slave and ivory trade, and the cathedral was a spiritual anchor for the resident officials and merchants. After a new cathedral was constructed in the mid-20th century, the old building was decommissioned and fell into significant disrepair. Recently, efforts have been initiated to stabilize the ruins and preserve them as a historical monument, as they represent an essential piece of Quelimane’s colonial urban planning and historical identity.
