Gurúè, located in northern Zambézia Province, is the heart of Mozambique's tea production and is widely regarded as one of the country's most scenic cities. The city sits at the foot of Mount Namuli, the second-highest mountain in Mozambique, which provides a cool and misty microclimate excellent for high-altitude crops. Established during the colonial era as Vila Junqueiro, the town was specifically developed to support the large-scale tea estates that continue to dominate the local economy. The surrounding rolling hills are covered in vast, verdant tea plantations, creating a unique and striking landscape. Besides tea, the region is also a significant producer of coffee and macadamia nuts. Gurúè serves as a base for expeditions to Mount Namuli, a site of global biodiversity importance with numerous endemic species. Despite its relatively remote location, the city remains a crucial agro-industrial hub known for its natural beauty and its historical ties to the global tea trade.
