Sangiin Dalai Lake is an under-the-radar destination in Khövsgöl province, far removed from the typical tourist circuits. This shallow saltwater lake sits in a wide basin and has a serene atmosphere excellent for nature lovers. The shoreline is often white with salt deposits, giving the lake an almost surreal appearance against the green steppe. The lake serves as a vital resting stop for numerous migratory bird species, including swans and various ducks, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The surrounding landscape consists of rolling hills and vast grazing lands where local nomads herd their yaks and sheep. Here, one can experience the simple and unadulterated life of Mongolian herders firsthand. There are no large hotels in the region; accommodation is found in small guest gers or through wild camping. Dining is centered on traditional dairy products and meat produced on the spot. Reaching the lake requires patience and a capable vehicle, as it is located in the remote Tsagaan-Uul district. The best time to visit is between June and August when the weather is most favorable.
