Bălți Steppe (Moldova)

Weather…

The Bălți Steppe, often referred to as the Bălți Plain, is an extensive natural region in northern Moldova, encompassing the basin of the middle Răut River. This region is characterized by an undulating plain relief with gentle hills, situated at an average elevation of about 150 to 200 meters. Historically, this area was a vast grassy steppe, which has now been almost entirely converted into arable land. The region is famous for its extremely fertile chernozem (black earth) soils, which are among the best in the world and form the backbone of Moldovan agriculture. Large-scale cultivation of cereals, sunflowers, and sugar beets is predominant here. The Răut River and its numerous small tributaries traverse the plain, having formed flat, wide valleys over time. Despite intensive agricultural use, remnants of the original steppe vegetation and wetlands can still be found along the banks of the watercourses.
