The Il-Qortin Ridge, located in northeastern Gozo near the village of Nadur, is a prominent plateau offering commanding views over the Gozo Channel. This elevated position was historically of great strategic importance for monitoring maritime traffic between the islands. The landscape is defined by a rugged karst plateau with sparse vegetation that nonetheless hosts a variety of endemic Maltese plant species. Below the ridge lie fertile valleys and the famous bays of San Blas and Ramla, making the area a vital part of Gozo's agricultural heartland. Geologically, the ridge is composed of Upper Coralline Limestone, which forms sharp escarpments and protects the underlying Blue Clay layers. Nearby prehistoric remains suggest a very early human presence in this exposed and easily defensible location. Today, Il-Qortin is a favored spot for hikers and nature enthusiasts who appreciate its seclusion and the memorable vistas of Comino and mainland Malta. The area retains an original wildness that stands in contrast to the more developed parts of the island.

Access to this narrow ridge is typically gained through the northern outskirts of Mellieħa. Hikers frequently utilize the existing trail networks that connect it directly with the adjacent Marfa Ridge.

The most favorable conditions for exploration are offered by the cooler months between October and May, when the sun is less intense. During mid-summer, the heat on the exposed Maltese elevations can become extremely oppressive.
