Foresta 2000 (Malta)

Weather…

Foresta 2000 is an ambitious reforestation project situated on the slopes of the Marfa Plateau in Mellieħa, directly below the historic Red Tower. The initiative is a collaborative management effort between BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Helwa, and the government agency PARKS. Its primary objective is the restoration of a Mediterranean woodland ecosystem, mirroring the natural habitats that existed prior to widespread deforestation. Geographically, the site encompasses a diverse mosaic of woodland, garrigue, and steppe habitats, fostering high levels of biodiversity. Since its inception in 1995, thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs, including Aleppo Pine, Holm Oak, and Lentisk, have been meticulously planted. Today, the area provides a critical sanctuary for various bird species, insects, and reptiles, while offering scenic trails with panoramic views of Mellieħa Bay. Foresta 2000 stands as a successful model for ecological rehabilitation and environmental education within the Maltese Islands.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are the best seasons as many migratory birds stop in the restored woodland. Summer is often too hot for active animal watching.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn and dusk are most productive when birds and other animals forage. At midday most species retreat to shade.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing the sensitive reforestation. Do not feed wildlife and take all litter with you.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars for birdwatching and a field guide to Mediterranean species are useful. Comfortable hiking shoes and sun protection are recommended.
🧭
Getting there
The area is reachable by car via local roads north of Malta. There is a small car park; public transport is limited.
🦌
What to expect
Animal density is lower here than in specialised reserves - enjoy the peaceful forest atmosphere. With luck you may spot rare songbirds or lizards.
