Ta' Duna Hill (Malta)

Weather…

Ta' Duna Hill is a prominent elevation in the central-western highlands of Malta, not far from the historic town of Rabat and the Dingli Cliffs. The geology of the hill is complex, consisting of layers of Globigerina Limestone and Upper Coralline Limestone. This region is of great historical significance as it is part of the plateau that has been settled since the Bronze Age and later served as a strategic location for Phoenicians and Romans. Ta' Duna Hill has far-reaching views across the fertile inland areas all the way to the coast. The area is known for its rural architecture, including traditional Maltese farmhouses (razzett) and small votive chapels. The sparse vegetation on the ridge alternates with terraced fields in the valleys where grapes and fruits are grown. The tranquility and geological diversity make the hill a valuable retreat for nature observation.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This modest hill situated on the island of Gozo is very easily accessible from the quiet outskirts of the town of Xagħra. The short journey follows tranquil, rural pathways that transition gently into the surrounding agricultural landscape.
📅
Best season
A visit is particularly worthwhile during the wetter months extending from late autumn right through to the early spring season. During summer, this small elevated area dries out severely and gives absolutely no natural shade for visitors.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The visible topography is deeply characterized by very gentle, easily walkable slopes that are frequently intersected by traditional agricultural terraces. However, the unpaved dirt trails crossing the hill can become somewhat muddy after rain.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, closed-toe hiking shoes or comfortably robust sneakers are generally entirely sufficient for a totally relaxed walk across the gentle slopes. In summer, reliable sunscreen and plenty of drinking water are truly essential here.
🅿️
Parking
It is ultimately best to securely park your vehicle safely in nearby Xagħra, where there is usually highly adequate street parking available within the residential zones. From there, the exact base of the hill is easily reached via a short stroll.
⚠️
Safety
There are absolutely no incredibly steep or distinctly dangerous abysses directly here, but strictly out of genuine deep respect for the active local farmers, the privately managed fields should never be entered. Open summit completely lacks storm shelter.
⏱️
Time needed
A wonderfully perfectly unhurried, gentle entirely relaxing circumnavigation directly surrounding the small hill, completely smoothly including the very brief approach right from Xagħra, is highly easily fully completed gracefully in exactly roughly one hour or two.
