The Morila Gold Mine in southwestern Mali, located about 280 kilometers from Bamako, earned the nickname 'Morila the Gorilla' for its extraordinary high grades and massive output during its early years. Commencing production in 2000, Morila was once one of the lowest-cost gold mines in the world, serving as a flagship asset for Randgold Resources and AngloGold Ashanti. The mine's geology consists of flat-lying, high-grade metasedimentary deposits that allowed for highly profitable open-pit operations over two decades. Despite several projections that its reserves were near depletion, the mine has seen repeated extensions of its operational life, most recently under the ownership of Firefinch (formerly Mali Lithium), which initiated aggressive drilling programs to identify satellite pits. Morila's contribution to the Malian economy has been immense, providing thousands of jobs and fueling the development of the Bougouni region. The operation is also a leader in mine closure planning, pioneering 'agri-mining' initiatives that transform former mining sites into productive farms, fish hatcheries, and poultry units. The mine site is an active industrial area, not open to the public. From the outside, the large waste rock dumps and processing facilities are visible from the surrounding country road.
