Ruins of Essouk (Mali)

Weather…

Essouk, located in the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains, was known in ancient times as Tadmekka and was a major hub of trans-Saharan trade between the 9th and 15th centuries. The city served as a vital junction for caravans transporting gold, salt, and slaves between West Africa and the Maghreb. Archaeological findings, including rock engravings and ancient inscriptions in both Tifinagh and Arabic, testify to a flourishing literary and commercial culture. Essouk is also regarded as the spiritual cradle of Tuareg culture, where nomadic traditions blended with Islamic scholarship. Following the decline of trans-Saharan trade routes in the 16th century, the city was eventually abandoned and partially reclaimed by the desert sands. Today, the ruins of Essouk are a destination for researchers and visitors attending the annual "Festival Saharien" to celebrate the region's heritage. The site provides deep insights into the early history of Saharan urbanization and cross-cultural exchange.
