Malé Friday Mosque (Maldives)

Weather…

The Hukuru Miskiy, also known as the Malé Friday Mosque, is the most significant architectural landmark of the Maldivian capital. Built in 1658 during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I, it is constructed almost entirely of intricately carved coral stone. The mosque is famous for its delicate stonemasonry, displaying Quranic verses and floral patterns with a level of detail that is unique worldwide. The interior houses magnificent wood carvings and lacquer work depicting scenes from Maldivian history and religious symbols. A striking feature is the massive minaret, designed in the style of the lighthouses of Mecca. Since 2008, the mosque has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as it documents the outstanding craftsmanship of the islanders. It continues to serve as an active place of prayer and is a symbol of the deep-rooted Islamic tradition of the Maldives. The surrounding cemeteries with their richly decorated gravestones tell the story of the sultans and nobles of past centuries.
