Muleeaage (Maldives)

Weather…

Muleeaage is a magnificent palace in the heart of Malé that today serves as the official residence of the President of the Maldives. The building was constructed between 1906 and 1919 under Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III and is characterized by its unique colonial style, blending European and traditional Maldivian elements. Originally intended for the heir apparent, Prince Hassan Izzuddin, the palace was utilized for various state purposes following the abolition of the monarchy. The architecture is defined by bright colors, artistic ornaments, and well-maintained gardens that stand in stark contrast to the modern urban landscape of Malé. During World War II, part of the palace was used to grow vegetables to combat food shortages. Muleeaage is situated directly opposite the Hukuru Miskiy and, together with the Medhu Ziyaaraiy, forms a significant historical quarter. The palace is not only an administrative center but also a symbol of the Maldives' transition from a sultanate to a modern republic.
