Velana International Airport (Maldives)

Weather…

Velana International Airport (MLE) is the primary air transport hub of the Maldives, located on the artificially expanded island of Hulhulé in the North Malé Atoll. It was officially opened in 1960 as a simple airstrip with a runway made of slotted steel plates and has since evolved into the country's most modern gateway. The airport received its current name in 2017 in honor of Ibrahim Nasir, the second president of the Maldives, whose family house name was 'Velana'. A major infrastructural development was the opening of the Sinamalé Bridge in 2018, which connected the airport directly by land to the capital Malé and the residential island of Hulhumalé for the first time. In recent years, the airport has undergone massive expansion, including a new runway capable of handling Airbus A380 aircraft and a new passenger terminal. The airport also serves as the base for one of the world's largest fleets of seaplanes, transporting tourists to distant resort islands.
