Livingstonia Cairn (Malawi)

Weather…

The Livingstonia Cairn at Cape Maclear is a site of profound historical and religious significance, representing the birthplace of the Christian mission in Malawi. Established in 1875 by the Free Church of Scotland, the original Livingstonia Mission was founded here as a living tribute to the legacy of Dr. David Livingstone. The cairn, a simple yet solemn stone structure, marks the exact location where these early missionaries first settled. Despite its idyllic location on the shores of Lake Malawi, the site proved to be perilous; many of the early settlers succumbed to malaria, leading to the mission's eventual relocation further north to higher ground. Today, the cairn is a designated national monument and is accompanied by a small graveyard where the early pioneers are buried. Set against the remarkable backdrop of the Lake Malawi National Park, the site has a quiet place for reflection on the Scottish influence that profoundly shaped Malawi’s educational, social, and spiritual landscape in the late 19th century.
