Senga Bay
Located just 120 kilometers from the capital city of Lilongwe, Senga Bay is the most accessible lakeside retreat in Malawi. It is a favorite weekend getaway for city dwellers, offering wide sandy beaches and a lively coastal atmosphere. One of the most authentic experiences in Senga Bay is visiting the lakeside fish market at dawn, as hundreds of fishermen return in traditional dugout canoes with their overnight catch, creating a scene of intense activity and local color. Just offshore lies Lizard Island, which can be reached by a short boat trip and gives excellent snorkeling among the colorful cichlids and a chance to see large monitor lizards sunning themselves on the rocks. The bay’s long stretches of sand are well-suited for leisurely strolls, while its range of hotels caters to both budget travelers and those seeking luxury. The area is also known as a major center for the capture and export of the lake's unique ornamental tropical fish. The dry season from May to October is the convenient time to visit, providing pleasant temperatures and clear views across the water. Its proximity to the capital makes it an easy addition to any Malawian itinerary, especially for those with limited time. Dining on grilled Chambo while watching the moon rise over the lake is a quintessential Senga Bay experience. This destination perfectly encapsulates the beauty and hospitality of Lake Malawi in a convenient and welcoming package.
