Gargaf Desert (Libya)

Weather…

The Gargaf Desert, also known as Jabal al Hasawinah, is a rugged desert region in west-central Libya, north of the city of Sabha. Geologically, it is a dome-like uplift composed of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks such as sandstone and shale, polished into bizarre shapes by eolian erosion. The area is famous for its rich deposits of trilobite fossils and other marine remains from the Silurian and Devonian periods, indicating that the region was once covered by a shallow sea. The landscape is extremely arid, characterized by vast gravel plains (serir) and jagged rock plateaus. Despite the inhospitable conditions, traces of prehistoric habitation exist, including rock engravings depicting once-native wildlife. The Gargaf Desert currently serves as a vital study area for geologists exploring the tectonic history of the African plate. The region is also strategically significant for the 'Great Man-Made River' project, as it contains key well-fields that extract water from deep-seated aquifers. The extreme silence and vastness of the Gargaf make it one of the most pristine locations in the Sahara.
