Jalu is a prominent oasis town in eastern Libya, located in the Al Wahat District on the northeastern edge of the Libyan Desert. Historically, the oasis served for centuries as a vital junction for trans-Saharan caravan trade, connecting the Mediterranean coast with the Kufra Oasis and regions further south in sub-Saharan Africa. The environment surrounding Jalu is characterized by vast sand dunes and an extremely arid climate, yet abundant groundwater resources have traditionally supported the extensive cultivation of date palms and cereals. In the modern era, Jalu's economic significance has surged due to the discovery of massive oil reserves in its immediate vicinity. The town now functions as a major logistical and service hub for the Libyan oil industry, while still maintaining its traditional oasis lifestyle. Culturally, Jalu is notable for preserving the Jalu language, a Berber linguistic enclave within a largely Arabic-speaking region. Despite industrial growth, the town remains an important site for understanding Saharan trade history and traditional desert architecture.
