Gar al-Marah

Gar al-Marah is a prominent elevation and rock formation located in the central part of the Sirt Basin in Libya. This geological structure is a classic example of a 'gara', a flat-topped butte or mesa formed by the erosion of surrounding softer rock layers over millennia. The formation consists primarily of Tertiary limestone and sandstone and rises sharply from the otherwise flat desert plain. In the past, Gar al-Marah served as a vital landmark for caravans and explorers navigating the vast deserts between the oases of Marada and Zella. The barren slopes support very little vegetation but are significant to geologists due to their well-exposed stratigraphy and fossil inclusions. Traces of early human presence, such as stone tools, are occasionally found in the vicinity, indicating the landmark's importance for travelers over thousands of years.
