St. John River Forest

Water temperature…
The St. John River Forest forms a continuous block of lowland rainforest along the St. John River in central Liberia, covering 500 km². This forest corridor supports viable populations of forest elephants, western chimpanzees, and pygmy hippopotamuses. The river, with a length of 300 km, is a vital transportation route for timber and rubber from inland plantations. Logging concessions and artisanal mining have fragmented the forest, but a 150 km² section is designated as a forest reserve with restricted exploitation. Soils are highly weathered Oxisols with low agricultural potential. The Kpelle people practice shifting cultivation along the riverbanks. Climate change projections suggest increased rainfall variability will affect forest dynamics.
